Dealfish (Trachipterus arcticus) illustration by Marco Graziano- Tiktaalik illustrations.
This illustration has been made for a scientific report concerning the first spotting of a dealfish(Trachipterus arcticus) in the waters of Newfoundland. The original specimen, has been observed after being washed on the beach following a storm. When it was recovered by the author the specimen was already decomposed and partially eaten by the seagulls. For this reason the author of the Discovery, Craig Franklin Purchase, Professor in evolutionary ecology of fishes at Memorial University of Newfoundland, sent me a picture from which I have later elaborated a reconstruction of the missing body parts and a photorealistic illustration as it was alive. This way, people who will read the scientific report will be able to imagine how a dealfish looks alike, being that this species is rarely observed by humans.
